About ISSN

The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an eight-digit serial number used to uniquely identify a serial publication, such as a magazine. The ISSN is especially helpful in distinguishing between serials with the same title. ISSN are used in ordering, cataloging, interlibrary loans and other practices in connection with serial literature.

History of ISSN in Nepal

The Nepal National Library was designated as the ISSN National Center for Nepal in 2008. Since then, it has been working in coordination with the ISSN International Centre based in Paris, France, to assign ISSNs to serial publications originating from Nepal.

Functions of the Center

• Receiving and processing ISSN applications from publishers in Nepal.
• Verifying bibliographic information of serial publications.
• Assigning ISSNs to eligible print and electronic serials.
• Maintaining the national database of ISSN records.
• Transmitting Nepalese ISSN records to the international ISSN Register.
• Promoting the use of ISSN among publishers, libraries and distributors.

Application Guidelines

To apply for an ISSN, publishers must submit the following:

• Completed online application form
• Copy of the citizenship certificate or valid ID of the publisher
• Company registration document (if applicable)
• Cover page and editorial page of the publication (for print)
• Valid URL pointing to the publication (for online serials)
